Canadian Home Product Fit Checklist
Measure the space, confirm compatibility, estimate ongoing effort, and check Canadian safety information before ordering a household product online.
Five checks prevent most poor-fit purchases.
A product can have strong reviews and still be wrong for your room, routine, outlet, storage space, or maintenance tolerance.
Complete these checks for every household product.
Space and access
- I measured width, depth, and height at the intended location.
- I measured the doorway, stair, elevator, cabinet opening, or route into the room.
- I allowed space for ventilation, cord routing, doors, lids, drawers, and removable tanks.
- I confirmed where the product will be stored when not in use.
Product identity
- The exact model number is visible on the listing or official product page.
- The colour or bundle I selected does not change important features.
- Included accessories are listed clearly.
- The manual or official support page matches the exact model.
Setup and compatibility
- The outlet, plumbing, mounting surface, Wi-Fi, phone, or operating system is compatible.
- I know whether tools, fasteners, adapters, or professional installation are required.
- The cord, hose, cable, or mounting position reaches the intended connection.
- The product can be removed for cleaning or service without dismantling the room.
Use and ownership
- The capacity matches the number of people, pets, rooms, or tasks involved.
- Noise, light, heat, moisture, or airflow will not disrupt the room.
- Replacement parts and consumables are available in Canada.
- The current return window, warranty, delivery, and seller information are acceptable.
Use the checklist that matches the product’s real environment.

- Expected replacement interval
- Canadian price and availability
Maintenance
- Parts that must be washed, dried, descaled, emptied, or sanitized
- Time required per week or month
- Access needed to remove tanks, trays, brushes, or covers
Energy and services
- Energy-use information for comparable appliances

- Battery replacement, professional service, or proprietary accessories
Compare like with like. For major appliances, the Canadian EnerGuide label shows annual energy consumption and where a model sits among similar models. Product class and capacity matter when comparing the numbers.
Do not rely only on ratings or promotional wording.
Before purchase
- Search the exact brand and model in the Government of Canada recalls database.
- Confirm the seller, warranty provider, and return address.
- Check whether instructions and safety warnings are available for the exact model.
- Treat vague performance, durability, health, and environmental claims as questions to verify—not facts.
After delivery
- Confirm the model and included parts match the order.
- Inspect the product, plug, cord, battery, fasteners, and packaging for damage.
- Keep the receipt, model number, serial number, and warranty information together.
- Stop using a product and follow official instructions if it is recalled or presents a safety concern.
This checklist is a general shopping aid, not electrical, plumbing, construction, medical, veterinary, or safety advice. Follow manufacturer instructions and use qualified professionals when installation or local rules require them.
